Helmholz PROFINET switches are managed industrial Ethernet switches that are themselves PROFINET devices, integrated into the controller project through a GSDML file. They prioritise PROFINET telegrams over other traffic, support ring redundancy as an MRP client, carry PROFINET Conformance Class B and report port diagnostics to the PLC. Redundant 24 V DC inputs and DIN-rail or IP67 housings suit machine and plant cabinets.
The FLEXtra family comes in several formats: the FLEXtra SLIM PROFINET switch (700-852-5PS01) in a narrow housing, the FLEXtra FLAT managed switches with 4 or 8 RJ45 ports (700-850-4PS01 and the 8-port variant), the FLEXtra STAGE 16-port switch (700-855-16P01) with ports up to 1 Gbit and SFP fibre slots for linking to IT, and the FLEXtra IP67 8-port switch (700-857-8PS01) for mounting outside the cabinet. Unmanaged FLEXtra switches cover Conformance Class A duty.

A managed PROFINET switch prioritises cyclic PROFINET traffic, supports MRP ring redundancy, and is configured and diagnosed from the PLC project like any other device. A plain switch works for small Class A networks but gives no diagnostics or ring recovery.
Yes. The managed FLEXtra switches ship with a GSDML file that is imported into TIA Portal or STEP 7, after which the switch is added to the PROFINET IO system with a device name, and port status is reported to the controller.
The FLEXtra STAGE switch is designed for that boundary, with 1 Gbit ports and SFP fibre to the IT side while keeping PROFINET priority on the machine side. For isolation with NAT and a firewall, add a WALL IE gateway.
