Read: MCB vs RCCB vs RCBO: What Protects What (and 30mA vs 100mA)
What is the difference between an MCB and an RCCB?
An MCB protects wiring: it trips on overload and short circuit, when too much current flows. An RCCB protects people: it trips when current leaks out of the circuit to earth, as happens during an electric shock, even though the total current is tiny. They detect completely different faults, which is why a safe board needs both.
Do I need an RCCB if I already have MCBs?
Yes. An MCB cannot detect the few milliamps flowing through a person during a shock; only a residual current device can. A single 30 mA RCCB after the incomer, or RCBOs on individual circuits, is what provides electrocution protection. It typically costs two to three thousand rupees, among the best safety value in the house.
Should I choose 30mA or 100mA sensitivity?
For protecting people in a home, 30 mA, always: it trips below the current level that endangers the heart. 100 mA and 300 mA devices are for fire protection and upstream positions in larger buildings, where they provide selectivity above downstream 30 mA units. They are not a substitute for 30 mA personal protection.
