Beyond 6 sq mm: mains, three-phase and voltage drop

Main incomers for larger homes, three-phase supplies, lift and pump feeders, and very long outdoor runs step up to 10 sq mm and above. At this level, sizing is driven as much by voltage drop and the sanctioned load on your connection as by current capacity, so calculation matters more than rules of thumb. Buying tips

  • Size for the circuit, not the house: lighting on 1 to 1.5 sq mm, sockets on 2.5 sq mm, each heavy appliance on its own 4 or 6 sq mm run. Mixing loads on one oversized circuit saves nothing and complicates protection.
  • Match the MCB to the wire, always. The breaker must protect the conductor: a 6 or 10 A MCB on 1.5 sq mm lighting, 16 to 20 A on 2.5 sq mm sockets, 20 to 25 A on 4 sq mm appliance circuits. Never upsize an MCB to stop tripping without upsizing the wire.
