MCB vs RCCB vs RCBO: What Protects What (and 30mA vs 100mA)
Open any modern distribution board and you will see a row of similar-looking switches doing very different jobs. One family protects your wiring from melting; another protects your family from electrocution. Confusing the two, or assuming one covers for the other, is the most common and most dangerous misunderstanding in home electricals.
This guide separates the three devices cleanly: the MCB, which watches for too much current; the RCCB, which watches for current escaping to earth; and the RCBO, which does both in one module. The MCB: guarding the wiring
A Miniature Circuit Breaker disconnects a circuit when current exceeds what its wiring can safely carry. It has two tripping mechanisms: a thermal element that responds to sustained overload, like too many appliances on one circuit, and a magnetic element that fires within milliseconds on a short circuit. The rating, 6A to 32A domestically, is chosen to protect the conductor behind it, which is why MCB and wire size are always paired. The RCCB: guarding people
A Residual Current Circuit Breaker compares the current leaving on the phase with the current returning on the neutral. In a healthy circuit these are identical. If they differ, even by a few thousandths of an ampere, current is leaking somewhere it should not be: through damaged insulation, a wet appliance, or a human body. The RCCB disconnects in a fraction of a second, fast enough to prevent most electrocutions. 30mA vs 100mA: what the sensitivity number protects
The sensitivity rating is the leakage current at which the device trips, and it defines its mission. 30 mA is the human-protection standard: currents above this level across the chest can trigger fibrillation, so tripping at 30 mA within milliseconds is what makes a shock survivable. 100 mA and 300 mA devices trip too late to reliably save a person; their role is fire prevention and upstream duty in larger buildings, catching gross leakage while letting downstream 30 mA units handle personal protection selectively. The RCBO: both protections in one module
A Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection combines an MCB and an RCCB in a single device: one module that trips on overload, short circuit and earth leakage. Its great advantage is selectivity. With one RCCB covering the whole board, a leaky geyser darkens the entire house; with an RCBO on each critical circuit, only that circuit trips and the refrigerator keeps running. How a typical home board puts it together
The standard single-phase arrangement reads left to right: a double-pole isolator or 32A incomer MCB, then a 30 mA RCCB rated at or above the incomer (40 A or 63 A), then the row of circuit MCBs, 6A lighting, 16A sockets, 20A kitchen and ACs. Everything downstream of the RCCB gets leakage protection. Nuisance tripping and Type AC vs Type A

Cumulative small leakages from many electronics can also add up near the 30 mA threshold. Separately, the type letter matters more as homes fill with electronics: Type AC devices sense standard AC leakage, while Type A also detects the pulsating DC leakage that inverter-driven appliances can produce. Buying tips
- Build the pair, not one or the other: MCBs alone leave people unprotected, an RCCB alone leaves wiring unprotected. Every modern board needs both functions, whether as MCB-plus-RCCB or as RCBOs.
- Insist on 30 mA sensitivity for anything protecting people in a home. Keep 100 mA and 300 mA devices for their proper roles: fire protection and upstream selectivity in larger installations.
- Size the RCCB to the incomer, not the circuits: commonly 40 A for a 2BHK and 40 to 63 A for larger homes, always at or above the incomer rating, since the RCCB does not protect itself from overload.
- Spend on RCBOs where they earn it: geyser, kitchen, outdoor and AC circuits. One leaky appliance then trips one way, not the whole house at dinner time.
- Buy ISI-marked devices from established brands and check breaking capacity on MCBs (10 kA is the quality domestic norm). Protection gear is the last place for unbranded bargains.

What is the difference between an MCB and an RCCB?
An MCB protects wiring: it trips on overload and short circuit, when too much current flows. Do I need an RCCB if I already have MCBs?
