Copper vs Aluminium Wire: Which Should You Use for House Wiring?

The honest comparison is not close for house wiring, but aluminium is not a villain either; it still dominates overhead lines and building service cables for good engineering reasons. Here is where each metal genuinely belongs, and what to do if your existing installation is aluminium.
Conductivity and size: the 1.6x rule
Copper conducts about 60 percent better than aluminium by cross-section. In practice, an aluminium conductor must be around 1.6 times the area of copper to carry the same current: where 2.5 sq mm copper feeds a socket circuit, you would need roughly 4 sq mm aluminium. That eats into any price advantage, needs bigger conduits, and still leaves you with aluminium's termination problems. By weight aluminium actually wins (it is a third the density), which is exactly why it rules long overhead spans where cables hang from towers, and why it loses indoors where space in the conduit is the constraint.
Terminations: where aluminium fails in homes
Aluminium's real weakness is not the run of wire, it is every screw terminal. Aluminium creeps (slowly deforms under contact pressure) and expands more with heat than brass or copper terminals do, so connections that were tight at installation loosen over years of load cycles. A loose joint arcs, oxidises (aluminium oxide is an insulator), heats further and eventually chars the switchboard. Copper terminations stay tight for decades. This is why insurance investigators and electricians find most 'wiring fires' at aluminium terminals in old boards, and why modern accessories are simply not designed or rated for aluminium conductors.

Aluminium wire is cheaper per kilogram, but the honest comparison is cost per wired point at equal safety. Upsizing aluminium 1.6x, using larger conduits, aluminium-rated terminals and more frequent maintenance narrows the gap sharply; for internal wiring the all-in saving is small on day one and negative over the installation's life. Copper house wire for a full 2 BHK typically costs 25,000 to 40,000 rupees at market prices depending on brand and grade, perhaps 15 percent of the electrical budget. Saving a few thousand rupees on the one component expected to last 40 years inside your walls is the wrong place to economise.
Where aluminium is still the right choice
Aluminium remains excellent engineering in the right place: utility overhead lines, the service cable from the pole or meter to your main board, risers and long feeder runs in apartment buildings, and armoured underground feeds to a farmhouse or borewell. Over long distances its lightness and price per ampere-metre beat copper decisively, and these cables terminate in proper aluminium-rated lugs crimped by people who do it daily. If you are getting a new connection, an aluminium service cable specified by the utility is completely normal; insist on copper only from the meter board inward.
Living with an existing aluminium-wired house
If your pre-1990s house is wired in aluminium, it is not an emergency, but it needs discipline. Have an electrician inspect and re-torque every accessible termination, watch for warm switch plates or a fishy smell (overheating insulation), and upgrade protection with an RCCB if the board predates one. The dangerous shortcut is joining new copper extensions to old aluminium runs with a twisted joint: the two metals form a galvanic couple that corrodes and loosens. What the standards and brands have decided
House wire sold in India as FR, FR-LSH or HFFR to IS 694 is copper-conductor wire; the aluminium equivalents survive mainly in bare feeder and service-cable categories. Modular sockets, switches and MCB terminals from mainstream brands are designed and type-tested around copper conductors. In other words, the industry has already made this decision for you: if a contractor's quotation for internal wiring mentions aluminium, treat it as a red flag for the rest of the quotation too. Specify the brand, grade and size of copper wire circuit by circuit and check the coils on delivery.

- Specify copper explicitly in any wiring contract, per circuit: 1.5 sq mm copper FR for lighting, 2.5 sq mm for sockets, 4 to 6 sq mm for AC and geyser runs.
- Check the print on the insulation on delivery: brand, size, grade and ISI mark. Coils priced well below the market rate for 'the same' copper wire usually have fewer or thinner strands than marked.
- For long outdoor runs (gate lights, borewell, outhouse), an armoured aluminium cable sized 1.6x is a legitimate money-saver; terminate it with proper lugs at both ends.
- Never join copper to aluminium with a twisted taped joint; use bimetallic connectors or a junction box with a proper terminal strip.
