What does IP65 actually mean?
Dust-tight (6) and protected against water jets from any direction (5). In practice: sealed against Indian dust storms and wind-driven monsoon rain, which is why it is the sensible default for any exposed outdoor fitting.
Is IP44 enough for a balcony light?
For a covered balcony where rain arrives only as splash, yes. For an open balcony or a wall that driving rain reaches directly, step up to IP65; the price difference is now small.
Which IP rating do bathroom lights need?
Fittings outside the direct spray need IP44; anything inside the shower's spray path should be IP65. Ceiling fittings in a steamy bathroom benefit from IP44 or better even away from the shower.
